* PORTERBROOKS POTABLE ENGINE * - A National Railway Museum Commission
The brief was to design and build a futuristic train for exhibition and use as an educational
toolbox in & around the museum. The train would then be used for their outreach projects.
It also had to be easily moved by only two people and fit in the back of a transit van.
PPE - March 2007
The Design - We ran a series of workshops with one Y6 class of children from Lakeside
Primary School. We looked at train designs and concepts from past to present & beyond.

We also visited the National Railway Museum to look at their trains.

Then the children formed design groups where they put ideas down on paper

and went on to build models.

The children's designs and models.

PPE - April 2007
Taking inspiration from the children's work Hugh Jart built scale models of the final design.

PPE - May 2007
The Build (the concept) -
We designed the actual train to be as large as possible but still able to fit in a transit van.
The idea was to split the train down the middle, front to back, creating 2 symetrical halfs.
Each half could be managed by just 2 people & fit inside most vans & single doorways.

The two halfs could be locked together for exhibition & transportation purposes.

The two halfs could also be opened for access to toolbox etc

What's that under the blanket............................................................Danger Mouse?
No it's............"VELOCITY".............named by the Y6 children of Lakeside Primary School

With the help from the poet, Ian McMillan, the children created a poem about the train.
